This last Friday the CM who introduced the COP introduced it as the "final run" of the COP. She told me afterward that after Walt's 100th celebration, the COP will be closed permanently. She did say that it was being done to make room for a new attraction that will take up the area that is now occupied by COP and the old Skyway, but she said she had no idea how soon, or what kind of attraction it might be. While it may be possible to do a new attrsaction in the COP building, it seems unlikely that that would also tie into the space for the Skyway. This would be quite significant since the COP building supports the track for the TTA.

They probably plan to put a character meet and greet area here with a nice big gift shop next to it. After all, Star Traders is kind of small.
This totally disgusts me. Maybe I just don't want to go back to see this if this really comes to pass. But maybe I'm just enraged right now. I'm just tired of the constant cheapening of a wonderful place.
And what will happen to TTA? I suppose that's on the way out too?
Sigh... Thanks for the info, I think... :(

Why did the CM say it was its last run if it will, as expected, stay open until the end of the celebration?
The CoP-Skyway-Space Mountain project has been rumored about for some time, with the most popular rumor being the area being used for the train dispatch of a new, DLP-like version of Space Mountain, but I do not think that's very likely. I haven't heard much else about plans for this area.
Well, I'll wait for some further confirmation. CMs say the darndest things sometimes. I wouldn't expect a commitment on anything for a couple weeks yet.

Just remember to take everything CM's say with a grain of salt. They could just be pulling your chain. But that mgith make sense closing it after the 100 YOM celeration. I sure hope not! :(

I normally don't put much stock in what CM's say, but the way she said it was like it was like something that was scripted.

bigsis1970: The CoP is the Carousel of Progress. Its an attraction that was originally build for the 64/65 Worlds Fair and is one of the first uses (along with the Abe Lincoln figure) of audio animatroics human figures Disney developed.

I was just in WDW and made a point of seeing COP..... just in case they closed it before I got there again. I just love that attraction. How sad if they close this wonderful Walt original!

:)
I have to go on CoP at least one more time. I hope it doesn't close before May, when I go with my girlfriend. We both love CoP and are looking forward to seeing it.......even if it is one last time :( . If they are to replace it, though, they better do something worthwhile and not having a greeting place, like where 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was.

COP was going to close for the past 2 years now. Is this really it?? ...the main mechanism that turns the theatre is, in a very real way, on its last legs. Its next breakdown could very well be its last.
I'm still hoping it'll be around (and around) in December, but I'm not going to count on it until I see it turning.

DW and I love COP and will really miss it if they close it. We have never missed seeing it on any of our visits. šoš

If this rumor becomes true, I will be very sad. I love the CoP.

This is my favorite attraction. I really hope it isn't closing! It's one of the few attractions where you can still see a lot of audio animatronic characters.

I wish they'd keep COP. It's Walt Disney's ride.
But if they do destroy it, someone pointed out that the TTA tracks go on the theater. All I have to say is that they'd better NOT get rid of TTA!!!
