Ok, I was just sitting here watching the tv and the Audi advert came on where it starts off as a spider and then turns into the car. The spider in the ad always gives me the creeps as I don't particularly like spiders :scared1:
I can directly relate this fear to an event in infant school when a friend of mine was bitten by a spider and started to bleed :worried: before this we used to collect them from the bushes in the playground like many young boys :) Afterwards though I just didn't want to be part of the gang anymore :(
Anyway it all got me thinking...what are your phobias and do you know why you have them???

I have a slight fear of heights. I am ok on planes; but if I look down at something that is very low or very high up I get a bit scared.
I hate bugs too, but if I have to I will get rid of them.

Hurrah, its not just me! Mine is more wooden sticks against teeth - just the thought of it sends a shiver through me. I will eat a lolly but get rid of the stick ASAP afterwards. As for wooden tongue depressers bleugh!

I have a fear of worms, when I was little a horrible boy put a worm down my top!
Im also scared of the dark and when I was a child I was scared of being alone in a house. I dont know where that fear came from but I can remember that from a very very young age I refused to be left alone in a room, I would have hysterics if I was left alone upstairs or downstairs in the house!!
Oh and linked to that fear I am absolutely petrified of ghosts!! :scared1:

I can't stand anyone vomiting around me. When I was a little girl someone at school was sick over me and ever since then it really freaks me out. I also have a fear of falling. I'm ok with heights but riding the TOT and Doctor Doom's Fearfall really freaks me out.

Anything with more than four legs, or wings. The combination is worse obviously. I remember going to a butterfly place in Thailand with DH - I ran through the entire place flailing my arms like mad... *shudders*

Snakes! They're horrible horrible things :( I also don't like flying, getting too and from WDW is a nightmare for me. I'm kinda dreading next year as we might be going to Disneyland California which means even longer flights :(

I have always had a fear of heights , not the best of fliers...recently I seem to have developed a fear of elevators/lifts, not sure why, just sometimes the doors seem to take ages to open..only really use them on holiday, mainly at the airport.

I think i've always had a terrible fear of heights and edges.
I can't go near a window wall (the floor to ceiling windows) in tall buildings without breaking out in a sweat. The truth is, i don't go near them at all, and can't stand it if i'm with someone who does.
However, i've always tried to push against the fear (i used to do a lot of rock climbing and rappelling when i was younger). But it didn't get rid of it at all. In fact i think it gets worse with age. I even have trouble driving on bridges now.
And i have always had a terrible fear of elevators. Getting stuck in the elevator in the World Trade Center (the one from Windows on the World) didn't help, but i'd had the fear long before that. And more recent incidents in elevators have made it worse. I always try to take the stairs rather than the elevator if i can.
those are the two biggies.
I also have a problem with thunderstorms (making florida, the place with more lightning strikes than anywhere else in the world, highly 'entertaining' for me as you can imagine). The thunderstorm problem stems from early on in my life. I grew up in tornado alley. My nanny was deathly afraid of tornadoes and whenever a tornado watch was issued, she would take me down to the storm cellar and hold onto me....so that couldn't have been good. And since there were always nasty thunderstorms at the time of a tornado watch, the two things must have been tied together in my head.
oddly enough, i'm not afraid of tornadoes at all....whenever i've encountered a tornado, i've been very calm and level headed in my actions....really strange considering.......
i think that's really it for major phobias.....i don't particularly like bugs and snakes, but i can manage around them....where i live we have lots of huge yucky bugs and really wicked snakes, not to mention scorpions, but i'm really not bothered by them at all......it only takes about 20 hits with my sandal to wack a scorpion to death....i can say that from experience (when i executed the scorpion who'd had the audacity to show up in my basement)...

I, too, have an irrational fear of spiders. Having seen that Audi advert last night for the first time, I had a nightmare about them last night (spiders, not Audis :rotfl: ).
Tha only other thing I'm really scared of is fire :scared1: I think because it's so unpredictable. My uncle used to be a fireman and I remember thinking of him as a real hero because I could never do it.

This is a really weird one - dont ask me why or how!!!
But I am petrified, of heavy machinery related to water, submarines, ships, oil riggs, bouys out at sea. Ive tried to rationalise it, its not the water Im scared of its just the rusty metal under water, - I know- weird!!
4 years ago DFi managed to get me to go through Nautlis at DLP when I got to the engine room bit I freaked out, pushing backwards and going back through the wrong way.
Shuddering just thinking about it!!

being a passenger when my partner is driving. Does that count? Also don't like being a rear seat passenger, like to see and anticipate what is ahead, if you know what I mean. :confused3
Also not too keen on wasps, crane flys, woodlice & earwigs.

Mine is also confined spaces i very often have really bad nightmares about not being able to get out of somewhere and end up running about the bedroom screaming and shouting. I once tried to evacuate the family 3 o'clock in the morning saying the house was on fire.
I also hate people being sick as i work in a school it is very difficult to avoid it

I always thought I was the only person who was terrified of butterflies :scared1: - now I know I'm not the only one! (I used to live near fields :flower2: , and when I was a toddler if I was naughty my gran would threaten that these really big butterflies (don't seem to see them around any more) would come and get me if I didn't behave :duck: ....thanks Nan! I still love her though  ) I can now stand having a small one flutter past me but I could never hold one or go to a butterfly park -

I really hate wasps. I think they are pointless horrible things whose only purpose in life is to cause disruption and distress. I am not fond of most of natures little friends really. My other big phobia and I can't even bear to look at one, is ventriliquist dummies...those old fashioned ones with cracked faces.
This stems from me seeing one in a horror film which I was watching as a child when I wasn't supposed to (had a babysitter) and it really frightened me.

Snakes.Snakes.Snakes.
I have the BIGGEST phobia of these things. I have no rational explanation....
I cannot watch one on tv. I cannot look at a picture in a magazine. I cannot even consider been anywhere near one.
Anybody who has ever been anywhere near me when I have the unfortunate luck to come across one of these things cannot believe the extent I am scared, My entire body shakes, My brain can't function well enough to tell me to turn away and I HAVE to know EXACTLY where it is which makes the situation worse because me eyes will not stop staring.
The only way I can be removed from 'danger' is when my mum/friend/boyfried realises what has happened and physically drags me away.
:guilty:   :worried: :sad1: :(

I've got two - clowns (especially ones with painted faces) and bats.
I can't even stand the thought of bats. We went to Ibiza last year and I used to hate walking back to our room at night coz I had to walk past a wooded area that was full of the horrid, evil little monsters.
Wasn't bad enough to stop me going out for a drink though!

I cant believe weve reached page three without anyone mentioning my personal phobia - the dentist! I cant even go into one with the kids when they have a checkup without almost throwing up. And if anyone is doing DIY with a drill then im under the cushions on the sofa. Teeth in general make me feel sick - brushing my own twice a day makes me wretch and gag. Ok, feeling bit icky now so i will close. :sad1:

I hate heights, this is anything from being on a high road, flying, tall buildings or rides.
Spiders, I have a very big fear of them big or little. Last year there was a huge one in the bedroom and DH killed and flushed it away with out showing me the evidence, I wouldn't sleep in the room for days. I still can't read in bed now :confused3
Daddy long legs, they really scare me!!!
My strangest phobia is Beans :confused3 I can't touch them, hate cooking them for DH and certainly can't wash up any pots or dishes with them on :crazy2:

sick.. cant bear anyone being sick -
My poor son, when he is sick (which fortunately is extremely infrequently) I almost run a mile.
If I feel sick, i start to go into a panic - again Im not sick often (not for the last 15 years I should say) --
Even the sick smiley makes me feel ill.
My worst nightmare happened on our way back from the USA in October.
My son complained of tummy ache. We went to get out of our seats on the plane, and he was sick all over me.. I basically took the full force.. well me and the chairs..
god, it was vile. My clothes were unwearable totally.. and my son continued to be sick all the way home, even as we got off the plane, even as we waited for our luggage and again in the car on the way home..
it was absolutely awful.
BA were amazing. They found me some first class PJs to wear (I was so happy to get out of my clothes that wearing PJs out of the airplane was no big deal at all!)
and they cleaned up as best they could, but we basically had to sit in sick all the way home.. (and the plane was delayed).
That was 5 of the most unpleasant hours of my life.
ewwww.. Im stopping, writing this is freaking me out!

Me Too!!! I'm sure my phobia comes from having always got sore throats as a kid and the doctor putting those wooden spatula things back my throat to check on my tonsils, its making me all shivery just typing about it!!!

And the feel of cotton wool balls, or the thought of biting a towel!
Not that I have ever biten a towel.
My Mum is petried of buttons! Yes, buttons.
Some are worse than others.
She particularly hates the ones with 4 holes, but they all send her freaky.
My Sister hates Camels, and DH hates Bees, Wasps and Cats (yes, cute little kitty cats).
I am mostly scared of grass hoppers/crickets (ick!) and marmite!!

Big Spiders, i often wake up thinking they are on the bed :scared: .
Also heights, i had a rough experience as a kid abseiling and have hated them ever since, before i didnt have a care in the world. I did have the flying one but through learning about Aircraft i can understand everything is ok so that doesnt bother me any more.
It's a known fact that as we get older and children come along we develop a stronger sense of fight or flight for their sake. We are more afraid to put them in dangerous situations.
